What Makes Patri

The Book of Luke

by Jenny O'Connell
Publisher: MTV Books
Release Date: April 3rd 2007
Genre: Young Adult, Romance, Contemporary, Chick Lit, High School, Womens Fiction
Goodreads | Amazon | BookDepository

Synopsis:

Emily Abbott has always been considered the Girl Most Likely to Be Nice -- but lately being nice hasn't done her any good. Her parents have decided to move the family from Chicago back to their hometown of Boston in the middle of Emily's senior year. Only Emily's first real boyfriend, Sean, is in Chicago, and so is her shot at class valedictorian and early admission to the Ivy League. What's a nice girl to do?

Then Sean dumps Emily on moving day and her father announces he's staying behind in Chicago "to tie up loose ends," and Emily decides that what a nice girl needs to do is to stop being nice.

She reconnects with her best friends in Boston, Josie and Lucy, only to discover that they too have been on the receiving end of some glaring Guy Don'ts. So when the girls have to come up with something to put in the senior class time capsule, they know exactly what to do. They'll create a not-so-nice reference guide for future generations of guys -- an instruction book that teaches them the right way to treat girls.

But when her friends draft Emily to test out their tips on Luke Preston -- the hottest, most popular guy in school, who just broke up with Josie by email -- Emily soon finds that Luke is the trickiest of test subjects . . . and that even a nice girl like Emily has a few things to learn about love.

Emily has always been a nice, or at least has always been considered that. Maybe that is because of her mother, newspaper columnist and bestselling author of etiquette books.

All comes crushing Emily's world when she founds out that she has to move back to Boston in the middle of her senior year while her father stays in Chicago. To add more drama, she is waitlisted by Brown and dumped the morning of her flight to Boston by her boyfriend while he is wearing the jacket she gave him for Christmas and eating the breakfast she prepared for him. That is what happens when you are nice. So Emily is determined to not go through this situations any more, is time to make her own decisions. But not just that. Guys need to learn to not act like total douchebags, and what could be better than create a handbook for guys?

Forced to move back to Boston, Emily joins Heywood Academy where the time capsule event is a big deal there for the seniors. Each senior puts something memorable in the capsule box and then, 50 years after, the next students of that year will see what is in the box. Emily, Lucy and Josie decide to put the Guy's guidebook in the time capsule box, because they have the strong feeling that guys from 50 years from now are going to be as jerks as their contemporary classmates. But first, they need to prove that such thing works. Who is gonna be the rat lab? Handsome and hurtingly hot Luke Preston who happens to be Josie ex-boyfriend and the guy who dumped Josie by e-mail over Christmas vacation. Could any guy do it worse? Yes, they do.

Before Emily moved to Chicago, Luke Preston was nobody. Now a few years later, Luke Preston is damaging cute and leaves every girl in Heywood Academy breathless. The worst part? He knows it. Luke Preston becomes a target to the three girls and at first he is a lovely guy trying to win Emily, but as time goes by, Luke Preston's true nature emerges dangerously. And not the way Emily was expecting. She has to spent time with him for the Guide, but she starts falling for the guy that it is supposed to be just an experiment. How do you tell the guy you are hanging out with that he was just an experiment, a game, at first?

Things get more complicated when her friend Josie starts talking about getting back with Luke once Emily has "domesticated" him. Truth is, Emily has not been telling everything that was going on with Luke and with her and the feelings she was starting to notice to arise for him. Everything, at this point, is a total and unimaginable mess.

The thing we really liked about this book is the main character: Emily. She is sick of being played for being nice and she is smart, funny and easy to identify with. Although we do love the Luke and Emily moments that are in the book, we feel a little bit sad for the fact that Emily is playing with our hot Luke all along.

On the other side, we do not really like Josie and Lucy sometimes. what kind of best friends ask another friend to date a guy with the Guide's purposes? It is like they are the bosses of this movement and they do not take in consideration Emily's feelings. We all knew since Emily walked in Luke's car that she was going to fall for him, if we realize this, her best friends too, right? Besides, Josie was dating him before all this started. Why would she wanted to put her best friend in the living hell that Luke made her live when he dumped her? Just to "re-educated" Luke in order to date him again? That is not being a best friend, not even a friend!

Although in the end, they both recant for everything (we cannot say how or why because that would be a massive spoiler), we still hold resentment toward them. But all teenagers act without thinking, always. It is like a massive rule. You have to act like this, if not you may as well be an alien. We have got over this phase, but hey, you are never too old to do silly things. Probably the Guide for Guy's would have been an awesome idea if Luke has known since day one of it. It would have been his choice to date Emily for the sake of science or whatever, but if this was the case, Luke would not have been the real Luke either. So...

However, we LOVE the tips that you can find in each chapter in the book. All are totally true! So guys, you should read this book too. Just to know a few things you probably do and should not do.

What do you think girls about the Tips? Interesting, uh? We bet some of you have gone like: man, it is true. They really do that thing. Right? And you guys? How do you feel about this?

If you liked the quotes, you just have to get your hands on The Book Of Luke to read more and get to know Emily and her story. We can assure you that you are gonna love it. If you like Susan Colasanti, Sarah Dessen and Jennifer Echols books, you are definitely going to go crazy about this book.

We have to thank Jenny O'Connell for this magnificent work and for sharing Emily's life with us.

by Shannon Delany
Publisher: St. Martin's Griffin
Release Date: June 22nd 2010
Genre: Young Adult, Werewolves, Paranormal, Fantasy, Romance
Goodreads | Amazon | BookDepository

Synopsis:

Everything about Jessie Gillmansen’s life changed when her mother died. Now even her hometown of Junction is changing. Mysterious dark things are happening. All Jessie wants is to avoid more change. But showing a hot new guy around Junction High, she’s about to discover a whole new type of change. Pietr Rusakova is more than good looks and a fascinating accent—he’s a guy with a dangerous secret. And his very existence is sure to bring big trouble to Jessie’s small town.
It seems change is the one thing Jessie can’t avoid.

13 to Life is a YA paranormal romance novel that will keep you on the edge of your seat. This is the first book of 5 of the 13 to Life series. You know we really like books that involve love triangles…guess what? This book doesn’t have a love triangle, it has a “love square” YEY!! (We are gonna have so much going on here).

So now, let us introduce you the main characters of this amazing book of Shannon Delany.

Jessica is the female main character in this story; her mother has recently died in an awful car accident, caused by someone close to her. She has a crush for Derek, who is the popular guy and the running back for the football team of Junction High, Ohh!! and is dating (tan tan tan tan! *drum roll*) a cheerleader called Jenny (surprised? Not so much).

Pietr Rusakova is new in town; he is part Russian part American, very good looking and the new interest of all the girls in Junction high. Pietr has a secret, a big one, something's going on in his family, but he’s not willing to tell anyone.

At first, Jessica didn’t like Pietr, because of Derek, of course. Bzut then… something unexpected happens and she starts to have strong feeling for Pietr. Suddenly in a turn of events, she starts to date him in secret, because he is officially dating Sarah--Jessica’s friend who has recently recovered from an accident--. Don’t call her anything yet, Jessica forced Pietr to date Sarah because her almost best friend is in love with him and Jessica doesn’t want her to get hurt.

Every time Jessica is with Pietr--the hottie Russian guy--some strange things happen. And when she hears a Skype call she’s not suppose to (busybody alert!), she now can tell something in Pietr’s life is wrong and she’s determined to find out.

We liked reading 13 to Life part because it involved love-problem situations and part because we were anxious to know what is Pietr and what’s wrong with him (we didn’t notice anything wrong!), we had to read almost until the end to know for sure.

So, book addicts we encourage you to read one of the incredible novels of Shannon Delany. We assure you book addicts that you won’t regret it! And that's why we are going to give this book 4 gorjuss doll and a half!

Falling Under (Falling Under #1)

by Gwen Hayes
Publisher: New American Library
Release Date: March 1st 2011
Genre: Young Adult, Fantasy, Paranormal, Romance, Demons
Goodreads | Amazon | BookDepository
Rate:

Synopsis:

Theia Alderson has always led a sheltered life in the small California town of Serendipity Falls. But when a devastatingly handsome boy appears in the halls of her school, Theia knows she's seen Haden before- not around town, but in her dreams.

As the Haden of both the night and the day beckons her closer one moment and pushes her away the next, the only thing Theia knows for sure is that the incredible pull she feels towards him is stronger than her fear.

And when she discovers what Haden truly is, Theia's not sure if she wants to resist him, even if the cost is her soul.

Meet Theia Alderson, a normal teenage girl who lives in Serendipity Falls. We bet you cannot say that you have seen a burning man fall out of the sky, did you? Well, our main character did. At first she didn't believe what her eyes saw, but the next morning there's a huge scorch mark on her lawn when the man landed.

Since then, everything changes. There's a shift in the air announcing the unavoidable evil lurking Serendipity Falls. It all gets even weirder when Theia dreams with a beautiful boy at a skeletons party where they are serenaded by faceless musicians. However, the most shocking part of all is when she meets her beautiful dream-boy.

It is obvious that cannot be a coincidence, but what does this boy want?

Well, we can tell for sure how the boy is. Handsome and charming with girls (although not with our Theia) and Theia cannot make herself stop thinking about him.

We can assure you that there's going to be a lot of love-hate in this relationship. A thing we love!

First, we have to introduce Under, where Theia meets with our dream-boy called Haden. It's all so dark and twisted that we were crept a little bit, but it was stunning. Everything is perfectly detailed without leaving the sinister notes of Under. I mean, Theia was serenaded by faceless musicians and went to a party where all the guests were skeletons.

We have to underline the fact that is an easy read to deal with and it will capture you, book addicts, in a blink. And we are sorry, relieved, glad to say that you won't find a love triangle here. Although we like love triangles a lot, this book wouldn't be the same with it. We think that our beloved couple has enough problems without a third party interfering.

Although we totally fell for our main couple, we were a little bit disappointed in things like Haden calling Theia lamb like in Twlight or the fact that their attraction is kind of weird.

Why the last thing? Well, Theia is attracted to him based on a couple of emotions that she feels the first time she sees Haden. And we know that he was spying on her for a while and that he's a douchebag sometimes. Although it is cute that he was trying to protect her by pushing her away (surprise!). Furthermore, Theia is constantly a twirl of emotions and acts in consequence, although she barely knows him, because, of course, our hero lover is always being mysterious and cryptic.

About the love scenes we have to remark that are excellent and there is a lot of sexual tension going on there. So, maybe, you have to read this parts of the book really slow (wink).

To bring the last piece of negativity on this book, because we really like it, the final happened really quick. A lot of decision were made without thinking and we have to almost to a list to keep track of the changes that were happening.

Beside that, the end of the story provides a radical twist that gets things going and gives the author the opportunity of having a second book.

You would get hooked in this twisted and supernatural love story if you cannot live without hate-love stories!

And because we have spoke a little bit dirty about this book, we leave you know with a quote, selected for us, that we thing you are going to like:

"𝒯𝒽𝒾𝓈 𝒾𝓈𝓃'𝓉 𝒶 𝒸𝓇𝓊𝓈𝒽; 𝒾𝓉'𝓈 𝑜𝒷𝓈𝑒𝓈𝓈𝒾𝑜𝓃. 𝒴𝑜𝓊 𝒶𝓇𝑒 𝓃𝑒𝓋𝑒𝓇 𝓃𝑜𝓉 𝒾𝓃 𝓂𝓎 𝓉𝒽𝑜𝓊𝑔𝒽𝓉𝓈. 𝒴𝑜𝓊𝓇 𝓈𝒸𝑒𝓃𝓉 𝒸𝒶𝓇𝓇𝒾𝑒𝓈 𝒶𝒸𝓇𝑜𝓈𝓈 𝒶 𝓇𝑜𝑜𝓂 𝒶𝓃𝒹 𝓅𝒶𝓇𝒶𝓁𝓎𝓏𝑒𝓈 𝓂𝑒 𝓌𝒾𝓉𝒽 𝓁𝑜𝓃𝑔𝒾𝓃𝑔. 𝐼 𝒹𝑜𝓃'𝓉 𝓌𝒶𝓃𝓉 𝓉𝑜 𝒽𝑜𝓁𝒹 𝓎𝑜𝓊𝓇 𝒽𝒶𝓃𝒹. 𝒫𝒶𝓇𝓉 𝑜𝒻 𝓂𝑒 𝓌𝒶𝓃𝓉𝓈 𝓉𝑜 𝓈𝑒𝓉 𝓎𝑜𝓊 𝑜𝓃 𝒻𝒾𝓇𝑒 𝒶𝓃𝒹 𝒽𝑜𝓁𝒹 𝓎𝑜𝓊 𝓌𝒽𝒾𝓁𝑒 𝓉𝒽𝑒 𝒻𝓁𝒶𝓂𝑒 𝒸𝑜𝓃𝓈𝓊𝓂𝑒𝓈 𝓊𝓈 𝒷𝑜𝓉𝒽, 𝓉𝑜 𝑒𝒶𝓉 𝓎𝑜𝓊𝓇 𝒽𝑒𝒶𝓇𝓉 𝓈𝑜 𝐼 𝓀𝓃𝑜𝓌 𝓉𝒽𝒶𝓉 𝑜𝓃𝓁𝓎 𝐼 𝓅𝑜𝓈𝓈𝑒𝓈𝓈 𝒾𝓉 𝑒𝓃𝓉𝒾𝓇𝑒𝓁𝓎"

Creepy much? Yes, But hey, we are dealing with supernatural here. Maybe that is the sweetest thing ever!

We liked this book, but it has some tiny stuff that didn't make the book as wonderful as it could have been, that's why we'd give it 3 stars and a half! But that does not mean it is not a wonderful book!

Die for Me (Revenants #1)

by Amy Plum
Publisher: HarperTeen
Release Date: May 10th 2011
Goodreads | Amazon | BookDepository
Rate:

Synopsis:

In the City of Lights, two star-crossed lovers battle a fate that is destined to tear them apart again and again for eternity.

When Kate Mercier's parents die in a tragic car accident, she leaves her life--and memories--behind to live with her grandparents in Paris. For Kate, the only way to survive her pain is escaping into the world of books and Parisian art. Until she meets Vincent.

Mysterious, charming, and devastatingly handsome, Vincent threatens to melt the ice around Kate's guarded heart with just his smile. As she begins to fall in love with Vincent, Kate discovers that he's a revenant--an undead being whose fate forces him to sacrifice himself over and over again to save the lives of others. Vincent and those like him are bound in a centuries-old war against a group of evil revenants who exist only to murder and betray. Kate soon realizes that if she follows her heart, she may never be safe again.

Maybe you’re thinking that a book with such a fabulous cover should be as stunning in the inside as it is on the outside, if that’s the case then you’re right. Die for Me is the kind of book you can simply not stop reading and fall in love with every character, especially Jules and Vincent (Ok, maybe that’s because we are girls!).

Die for Me tells us the story about Kate, a girl who has recently lost her parents, and has to move to France with her grandparents. Having lost your parents is sad and tragic, but she’ll find a way to leave all that darkness behind and open up to love.

Kate met Vincent, a lovely young man--maybe not so young, but he sure is lovely--, and started to fall in love with him. But love is not always simple. When Kate sees Jules, the most charming character of all, (And the one we are deeply in love with) die but then sees him again at a museum, alive and kicking, she finds out what his lovely young lover is. Vincent and his friends, Jules included, are not common teenage boys. They are Revenants, a kind of walking dead, that had once died saving someone's life and are eternally forced to relived death again and again.

We really loved this book; we were so into the Kate-Vincent love story that at some point we believed we were actually dating Vincent, though we’d prefer to date Joules (put a nasty face here) over Vincent. But don’t get us wrong, this wasn’t the only reason that makes Die for Me a breathtaking, astonishing and pleasant book, and, therefore, the reason why we loved it. We enjoyed everything; the main characters, the introduction of the Revenants concept, the way Amy plum described every place making you feel like if you were there. We have to point out the fact that everything is set in Paris, France. And some much other stuff that we cannot reveal to not spoiler you, book addicts! Sorry.

Though we would have liked a little more of the charming personality of Jules, we think that Die for Me is an impressive book and spellbinding from the beginning to the end.

So if you like romance, fiction, maybe zombies--aka Revenants--, and you haven’t read this book yet, then this is a must-read book for you.

The Unofficial Zack Warren Fan Club (Unofficial #1)

by J.C. Isabella
Release Date: 2012
Goodreads | Amazon
Rate:

Synopsis:

Welcome to the big leagues. To secrets and scandals. It's all about the game. Who's playing. Who's not. Who has no idea about the game. And...wait, what game are we playing?

I'll leave that for you to decide.

Where to start is the big question for Chloe Baker. How was she supposed to explain to Zack Warren that she started a fan club for him when she was a kid? It was just a game. A way to make friends and have fun. She never thought it would spiral out of control. And never. In a million, gazillion years, did she think it would follow her to college. How could she tell him her best friend Lana kept the club alive? That she had nothing to do with the craziness?

Chloe didn’t understand why she cared so much about Zack's opinion of her. She hated him. He hated her. They had very mutual feelings of dislike for each other. So he'd just hate her even more when or if he found out.

And that's totally fine...she thinks.

Zack Warren had a soft spot for Chloe Baker. He likes the way she walks. He likes the way she talks. If he was poetically inclined, he’d write a sonnet about her ass.

It's Zack’s junior year of college. He’s got things to worry about. Scouts from the major leagues. Baseball games. Contracts. Grades.... His father ran away to Vegas with Chloe's mother. He didn’t have time to worry about a girl. But he did. He worried about Chloe a lot, especially with that jerk Max sniffing around her. It's weird though, to like your stepsister, right?

But Zack could argue that he saw Chloe first. Way before his dad met her mom. He was too young to stake a claim. But just didn’t care anymore.

He’s done playing games.

We think that we are officially members of the Unofficial Zack Warren Fan Club. Or at least, we would want to. We were eager to arrive at the last page and then we regret it when it was over.

J. C. Isabella presents us Chloe and Zack who are studying at the same university. Of course, for us girls, the boy is cute and hot! They dislike each other since grade school or at least that’s what we all believed since the first page.

As it turns out they start living together! But not like you think, lovesick readers. Their parents randomly meet in a grocery story and fall in love. So cute... (we love these two characters). Did you all arrive at the part of… awkward much? Wait for it. Because the share a house together, sleep really close (in different rooms!) and share a bathroom. Whaaaat?! Yes, a bathroom, ladies. We will know about Zack hotness in detail.

You think that is the only problem for our main character? Chloe is sick worried that Zack finds out about the Unofficial Fan Club now that they live together could ruin everything and her best friend… ugh. We started to hate her.

We were happy watching the two of them dealing with their problems with each other. They were getting along while living together and with their parents, in their college breaks. They even become friends, that in our opinion is a fantastic thing to experience with them. But things get complicated.

In the end, they reveal their true feelings for one another in a very mature way. We were delighted and breathing again. They are perfect together and they compliment each other. They show us that growing up does not mean to leave all the fun behind and that at some point we need to be mature and express how we feel even if it is scary.

It is interesting to read this book because we leave behind the far fetched sterotypes that we are used to and (why deny it?) love. The plot was great and the fact that we didn’t expect most of the things made the book even more captivating.

We really enjoyed this story from the first page to the end. We never expected some turns in the story like when everything becomes a mess and we started to cry. Yes, actually crying. We love Chloe and Zack love-hate relationship, but we were expecting more forbidden and I-think-I-hate-you love!

J. C. Isabella we want you to know that you did a fantastic work with this book and we are still waiting for another story of Chloe and Zack or, if it is not possible, a different story like theirs.

We have to confess that since The Unofficial Zack Warren Fan Club we keep an eye on J. C. Isabella work. We enjoyed being Zack as well as Chloe and it is not so unraveling to find out that boys have feelings! We have been amazed with that part. We want some boyish point of view in our beloved stories.

For all that, we finish saying: Thank you J. C. Isabella for this sizzling and heartbreaking job! We are expecting more of that!
