What Makes Patri

Nemesis and the Swan

by Lindsay K. Bandy
Publisher: Blackstone Publishing
Release Date: October 27th 2020
Genre: Young Adult, Historical, Fiction, France
Goodreads | Amazon | B&N | BookDepository | Kobo | Google Books

Synopsis:

From her prison cell in revolutionary Paris, nineteen-year-old aristocrat Hélène d'Aubign recalls the events that led her to choose between following in her parents' unforgivable footsteps or abandoning the man she loves.

Despite her world of privilege, Hélène is inspired early on by the radical ideas of her progressive governess. Though her family tries to intervene, the seeds of revolution have already been planted in Hélène's heart, as are the seeds of love from an unlikely friendship with a young jeweler's apprentice. Hélène's determination to find true love is as revolutionary as her attempt to unravel the truth behind a chilling set of eye-shaped brooches and the concealed murder that tore her family apart.

As violence erupts in Paris, Hélène is forced into hiding with her estranged family, where the tangled secrets of their past become entwined with her own. When she finally returns to the blood-stained streets of Paris, she finds everything-and everyone-very much changed. In a city where alliances shift overnight, no one knows who to trust.

Faced with looming war, the mystery of her family's past, and the man she loves near death, Hélène will soon will find out if doing one wrong thing will make everything right, or if it will simply push her closer to the guillotine.

Can you briefly describe NEMESIS AND THE SWAN and its characters?

From her prison cell in revolutionary Paris, nineteen-year-old aristocrat Hélène d’Aubign recalls the events that led her to choose between following in her parents’ unforgivable footsteps or abandoning the man she loves. As violence escalates, the family secret behind an eerie set of brooches will either send her to the guillotine or save her life.

Hélène is the artistic daughter of a marquis who has always felt like an outsider. Growing up, the only people who really paid attention to her were her progressive governess and a jeweller’s apprentice named Theo. As revolution breaks out in Paris, she has hope that it might mean a better future for France—and for her and Theo.

Theo has an artist’s eye for jewellery design, and even though it’s impossible for them to be together, he’s had a crush on Hélène for years. He encourages her in her drawing, listens when she talks, and makes her laugh even when her parents are driving her crazy.

Alexander Evereaux is the rich pretty-boy Hélène’s parents want her to marry. He’s practically perfect in every way—except personality.

Lucille Chevallier is the jeweller’s daughter who has her sights set on marrying the apprentice.

Jaques Bennette is an adorable dark-eyed painter with dangerous friends.

Simonne is a spicy Revolutionary runaway obsessed with chocolate and freedom.

And you’ll have to read the book to meet the rest!

Who would you say is your favourite character from the story and why?

This is like asking me to pick my favourite child or cat! I guess if you’re twisting my arm, I’ll choose Théo, because he is a lot like my favourite person in real life—my husband, Clay.

And, okay, I know I’m cheating here, but I have to add in Adele, because I adore the way she and Hélène help each other to heal from trauma and form such a special bond. Never underestimate the power of a little girl!

How did the story occur to you? Did you find inspiration anywhere?

Like Hélène, I spent most of my life trying to unravel the mystery of my own estranged family. Even after finally meeting my great-grandmother shortly before her death, I still didn’t know what happened to split my family apart. Nobody would tell me, and it was maddening! As I learned more about my family’s past, I started thinking a lot about identity in the context of the truths and lies our families tell us. Where do nature, nurture, and choice intersect? And what happens when you throw in political turmoil, riots in the streets, forbidden love, and a guillotine?

Then, while researching period fashion, I came across gorgeously creepy Lover’s Eye jewellery. I discovered that these painted eyes were designed for real-life secret lovers and had mysterious origins in 18th century Paris before becoming a 19th century trend….

Viola! Nemesis and the Swan.

If you could choose one song to describe your book, which one would it be?

These Streets by Bastille

If your book was going to be made into a movie, who would play your characters?

Hélène—Lily Collins

Théo—Ryan McCartan

Jacques Bennette—Harry Styles

Lucille— Grace Van Dien

Alexander Evereaux—Riker Lynch

Simonne—Selena Gomez

What drink and place do you think will go with your book to have a perfect book date?

I’ll take a Café au lait to-go and walk along the Seine.

Can you recommend your readers any other books in case they are left hungry for more once they finish NEMESIS AND THE SWAN?

My favourite recent read was Etiquette for Runaways by Liza Nash Taylor. It pulled me in, broke my heart, and patched it up again. Lost girls, loyal boys, moonshine trials, and jazz-era Paris? Yes please!

Lovely War by Julie Berry held me in its spell, and the audiobook is exceptional.

I’m also a huge fan of Marcus Sedgwick’s historical fiction, including The Foreshadowing, Revolver, and Midwinterblood. Suspense, tight writing, and a perfect dose of supernatural mystery make these fast-paced reads that keep you thinking long after you close the book.

What would you say is the most difficult part of writing a book?

Braving the unknowns. Even good ideas don’t come with the promise of becoming great stories. Over and over again, writers walk into the dark with our stories, trusting that the next step will materialize if we put in the work. Pushing through the darkness without really knowing how long it will take, how many times we will need to re-think or re-write (or if anyone will like it when it’s done) is the hardest part!

What’s next for you?

My next book, INEVITABLE FATE, has a very different setting from Nemesis and the Swan, but there is still plenty of mystery, artsy atmosphere, and romance. It begins in 1913 at King’s Park Asylum on Long Island, where the tattooed “freak” accused of setting the amusement park fire that killed his true love writes a letter to his future self, convinced he is destined to love—and lose—her again if they can’t outsmart Fate. Over a hundred years later, Evan Kiernan reads this letter, but the events leading to his girlfriend’s death have already been set into motion. As he races against time to intervene, he finds that the past, present, and future hinge on the number three.

But For The Mountains

by Erin Riha
Publisher: REUTS Publications
Release Date: June 3rd 2020
Genre: Young Adult, Dystopian, Fantasy
Goodreads | Amazon | B&N | Bookdepository | iTunes | Kobo

Synopsis:

Arden Thatcher wasn’t meant to be chosen.

But when her name is announced, she’s presented with something she never thought she’d have: a future away from her abuser. Shuttled off to attend the prestigious National Women’s Institute, Arden will receive Nordania’s highest honor, studying with other elite candidates to become leaders, diplomats, and ambassadors on the world stage.

Only, the institute’s not quite what she expected. Paraded around in gown after gown, the tests seem less about educating and more about a different competition, with a very specific prize at stake—the Nordanian Prime Minister’s son. Despite the dean’s protestations that angling for an engagement leads to expulsion, Arden sees the truth. There’s a secret bubbling beneath the institute’s refined surface, and those who refuse to play along may well wind up dead.

With the danger escalating, and the return of her abuser on the horizon, Arden’s shiny future becomes a gilded cage. And this time, she’s going to need powerful allies to escape.

Political intrigue, swoon-worthy romance, and a dash of dystopian flare, But for the Mountains begs the question, how do you change the world when you’re not allowed to try?

Can you briefly describe BUT FOR THE MOUNTAINS and its characters?

Arden Thatcher wasn’t meant to be chosen. She wasn’t even supposed to have a shot, but when her abuser, submits her name as a cruel joke, she is chosen as a candidate to the National Institute for Women. She makes her way to the institute and is both dazzled and intimidated by the other candidates and the tradition of the place. She worries that she won’t be able to keep up, but when she meets Declan, the Prime Minister’s handsome son, she questions what she’s really doing there.

The first lady also questions what she’s doing there, and every time Declan shows Arden a kindness, she interferes. That’s how Arden ends up seated next to a drunk self-proclaimed pirate during a state dinner. Beck quickly becomes a true friend and supporter in Arden’s new champagne-crusted world, teaching Arden not just how to take a hit, but how to hit back. When danger finds her at the institute, Arden has to learn to stand on her own two feet, or she’ll lose her shot at a life of her own choosing.

Of course, the story couldn’t be told without some colorful characters. Arden is a bright, resourceful seventeen-year-old whose dearest wish is to live a life of her own choosing. When she was twelve, she was sent to live with a wealthy benefactor, who made a career out of sponsoring similarly downtrodden girls for their eventual nomination to the National Women’s Institute. But once she was deemed not good enough, she was neglected to a life of servitude and abuse at the hands of her benefactor’s son.

Declan is the son of the prime minister and frankly, he’s tired of the whole dog and pony show surrounding the institute. Everyone knows that the girls who attend are looking for a husband, and there’s always a top prize. For the past two years, he’s been the top prize, but it hasn’t worked out. But this year, he saw an application that caught his eye and gave him hope. And even though there wasn’t time to interview her, he’s more excited to meet Arden Thatcher than any other candidate.

Beck is a pirate. Just ask him. And don’t call his pride and joy a boat. It’s a ship. He’s one of only two captains that knows how to successfully traverse the dangerous Mittlesee, and he’s become known as the wunderkind that can get things across it fast and safely. He stops in at the capital, awaiting a shipment, and attends a dinner at the request of the first lady. But when he sits down next to Arden Thatcher, he gets much more than he bargained for.

Could you describe your story with emojis?

🎉🍾😱🏫💃😐😑😶🙄😳😍😒😬🤫🕵️‍♀️🏃‍♀️🏔🗻⛰⛵️

Who would you say is your favourite character from the story and why?

It is so hard to choose just one. Beck is so much fun to write and Declan is so sweet and thoughtful. But honestly, I think my favorite character might be Neve – Arden’s friend from the peninsula.

Although we don’t get to see much of her in this book, Neve is so headstrong and feisty. I have so much fun writing her. She’s a lot like Beck in the sense that I can go into a writing session with one idea, and she will veer off the page and into so much trouble. She knows exactly what she wants, and despite being handed a massive roadblock, you just know she’s going to get that “win.”

How did the story occur to you? Did you find inspiration anywhere?

I’d been watching a lot of The Bachelor at the time, and I started thinking about what it would look like if none of the contestants were there for the “right reasons,” and if the “right reasons” weren’t exactly what was proffered. I had been thinking on this, and I had a dream about Arden and Declan. To be honest, I can’t even remember what the dream was, but their interaction gave me this really heavy feeling and I wanted to explore it. I did some free writing, and the rest of the story grew from there.

If you could choose one song to describe your book, which one would it be?

“Welcome Home” by Radical Face

What drink and place do you think will go with your book to have a perfect book date?

A short hike along a rambling river that leads to the perfect picnic spot: a sunny enclave dripping with sweet pea and columbine and other wildflowers. For lunch, packed sandwiches on good, crusty bread, with vegetables roasted in garlic and lots of herbs. You’ll definitely want to wash it down with some sparkling water – lemon, preferably.

Can you recommend your readers any other books in case they are left hungry for more once they finish BUT FOR THE MOUNTAINS?

The Glittering Court series by Richelle Mead

The Beholder by Anna Bright

What would you say is the most difficult part of writing a book?

Big picture revisions are the hardest for me. Once I’ve done the initial work plotting and writing, I find that it’s hard to solve any structural problems that I’ve been blind to throughout the writing process. I’m a very visual person, and at that point, the book as a whole sort of becomes like this murky blob of a thing to me, and it’s hard to see the forest for the trees. At that point, it’s helpful to bring in a critique partner or beta reader to help me come up with a plan.

What’s next for you?

The sequel to BUT FOR THE MOUNTAINS is currently in revisions and (fingers crossed) should release in 2021. I’ve also been working on a novella set in the world of MOUNTAINS about a side character who has a whole lot of pluck and refuses to let anyone other than herself dictate her future. She goes on a pretty wild adventure and it’s been so much fun to spend some time in her head.

Hello beautiful bookish people,

Today I have a cover to share with you all from one of my favourite authors. If you stick until the end, you will also have the opportunity to enter the author's giveaway!

The beautiful Intisar Khanani is releasing a short story prequel to her multi-starred fantasy series, Dauntless Path.

Brambles (Dauntless Path #3)

by Intisar Khanani
Release Date: December 7th 2020
Cover Designer: Jenny Zemanek
Goodreads

Synopsis:

In the kingdom of Adania, everyone knows what Princess Alyrra did to earn the court's contempt, her mother's disdain, and her brother's hatred.

She betrayed her own.

Yet, the truth hides another story, one of honor and honesty, of a princess gambling her own life for another's. It's a tale of courage and consequences, and a choice that can never be undone.

A short story prequel to her multi-starred fantasy, Thorn, Intisar Khanani's "Brambles" gives Alyrra's account of what really happened all those years ago, and how a few critical days turned her life into a daily fight for survival.

“I’ve got a secret,” Valka says, stepping up beside me. We stand at the edge of the roughly cobbled courtyard before the hall, mud sticking to our boots and our cloaks flapping in the chill spring breeze.

The last of this morning’s departing carriages rolls toward the gates. Edlyna nods regally through the carriage window at us.

“Wouldn’t you like to know it?” Valka presses.

I glance helplessly around, as if someone might appear to rescue me. But of course, Valka has timed her approach perfectly: Mother has already departed with her coterie of vassals, and my brother hasn’t bothered to come at all. There are a few other nobles who have yet to leave for their lands for the summer, including Maralinde. But, along with the rest, she’s busy packing. Unlike Valka, unfortunately.

“If it’s a secret, you shouldn’t tell anyone,” I say, shifting uneasily. “You’re such a mouse, Alyrra.” Valka gives a sweet, tinkling little laugh. The sound of it makes my skin prickle. I’ve heard that laugh enough times now to know that what she has to share will hardly be innocent.

Intisar Khanani grew up a nomad and world traveler. Born in Wisconsin, she has lived in five different states as well as in Jeddah on the coast of the Red Sea. She first remembers seeing snow on a wintry street in Zurich, Switzerland, and vaguely recollects having breakfast with the orangutans at the Singapore Zoo when she was five. She currently resides in Cincinnati, Ohio, with her husband and two young daughters.

Until recently, Intisar wrote grants and developed projects to address community health with the Cincinnati Health Department, which was as close as she could get to saving the world. Now she focuses her time on her two passions: raising her family and writing fantasy. Intisar’s debut novel, Thorn, was picked up by HarperTeen and will be re-released in Winter 2020. In the meantime, she’s hard at work on the remaining books of The Sunbolt Chronicles.

The Cup and The Prince (Kingdom of Curses and Shadows #1)

by Day Leitao
Release Date: October 15th, 2020
Genre: Young Adult, Fantasy, Romance
Age: 15+
Goodreads | Amazon | B&N | Bookdepository

Synopsis:

One prince wants her out.
Another wants her as a pawn.
Someone wants her dead.

Zora wants to win the cup and tell them all to screw themselves.

Yes, 17-year-old Zora cheated her way into the Royal Games, but it was for a very good reason. Her ex-boyfriend thought she couldn't attain glory on her own. Just because she was a girl. And he was the real cheater. So she took his place.

Now she's competing for the legendary Blood Cup, representing the Dark Valley. It's her chance to prove her worth and bring glory for her people. If she wins, of course.

But winning is far from easy. The younger prince thinks she's a fragile damsel who doesn't belong in the competition. Determined to eliminate her at all costs, he's stacking the challenges against her. Zora hates him, hates him, hates him, and will do anything to prove him wrong.

The older prince is helping her, but the cost is getting Zora entangled in dangerous flirting games. Flirting, the last thing she wanted.

And then there's someone trying to kill her.

Disclaimer: Mentions of cheating, and alludes to virginity and sexual relationships. No steamy content.

Can you briefly describe THE CUP AND THE PRINCE and its characters?

Our girl, Zora, leaves her Dark Valley to go to a competition in the castle. But see, she wasn’t the valley’s champion. She just went to spite her boyfriend. Or rather, ex-boyfriend.

But that’s the thing, now she really needs to win or they’ll blame her.

In the castle, she meets 3 brothers: the princes Griffin and Larzen, and the young king Kiran.

Griffin doesn’t want Zora to compete. He tells her that she should rather go to balls and maybe even get a husband. That’s offensive and infuriating. Now she wants to win just to make him shut up.

With Larzen and Kiran, oh, it’s some weird flirting entanglements.

Could you describe your story with emojis?

😰😟😢👿🍾🌄🤦‍♂️🏰🏟️🎻🎆🤩👗🤢🤨🎵🧙‍♀️🏇😨🗡️🐎🎵😠⚔️⚗️🥂😟😱🛡️😭🏹💘

Never thought I could summarize a novel in 32 characters. But there it is.

Who would you say is your favourite character from the story and why?

The protagonist, Zora, surprised me in many ways. She’s quite compassionate and cries easily. It’s the first main character I write who cries that much. Usually crying is the ultimate humiliation, but I find that for Zora it’s a strength in the sense that she’s not afraid to feel deeply.

Something that struck me was her search for hope. It’s funny, she says that her dream is to live in a world without walls and at first I thought it was about her unique reality in that fantasy world, but then I realized it applies to us, too, who live in a world with so much injustice and inequality. It’s from where I got the dedication of the book.

Zora has an intro short story, The Shadows and the Children, which I wrote after the novel to fill in some background information and as a freebie for my newsletter subscribers. For some reason, I cry at the end of it every time I read it (when revising, proofreading, etc.) I guess it’s the idea to keep fighting, keep trying, keep searching for hope even when everything seems hopeless. Perhaps for some reason this idea touches me personally. Which is weird, as I hate crying. And it’s quite weird to cry when reading your own writing. And I don’t think that this story is going to touch people other than weird me. So no worries, no tears there.

Still, despite the sensitive main character, The Cup and the Prince is fluff fun and light.

How did the story occur to you? Did you find inspiration anywhere?

I was toying with the idea of writing a book with a competition. But then, at the same time, I was thinking: what would it be like to live in a place where monsters spawn in the dark? What if they could spawn everywhere, not only outside? From that I got the Dark Valley and the ideas meshed together.

Now yes, it’s slightly inspired on Minecraft. Maybe I played it too much with my son. There are many differences, of course. There’s no crafting and the Dark Valley doesn’t have large animals. But then, since I already had a bit of Minecraft inspiration, I ran with it and added enchanted objects and potions, as they fit well in the story. And Zora’s enchanted sword looks gorgeous on the cover!

And of course I realize it’s not a very compelling premise. I mean, if I wanted to use Minecraft as an inspiration I should write middle grade 😂. And that’s what I told myself. I said, “Nope, let’s write something more compelling. This idea sounds like lemon-filled chocolate. Don’t get me wrong, I love them both, but the mix is dreadful.” And then I replied, “Sure, get a better idea, but while you brainstorm it, why don’t you just keep writing this book?” So I started writing it and it just flowed really well and it’s still flowing. I think it’s a light, fun read. And yes, I have arguments with myself.

If you could choose one song to describe your book, which one would it be?

Oh, it’s a cliche, but I feel that Zora has a lot to prove because she’s a girl in a male-dominated space. See, women are not forbidden in the Royal Games, but they’re not treated the same either.

I find that women often have this burden of having to prove that they belong in certain places. Just think about female movie directors, for example.

So the song I think describes some aspects of the book is No Doubt’s “Just a Girl”.

And if I may add a second song, I was in a Danzig mood when I started to write this book, so I’d add “Devil’s Plaything”. That said, I find that if I really got inspired by that song I’d end up with a much sexier book. 🤔 I need to write that book. For the series A Kingdom of Curses and Shadows, the inspiration is subtle.

If your book was going to be made into a movie, who would play your characters?

Young, unknown actors, of course!

But I know that this question is to get a hit about the look of the characters. This book is a rare case where I actually got inspiration from a real person.

For some reason I wanted one of the princes to be short, and I remembered a famous singer who’s not tall and looked absolutely gorgeous when he was young. That’s Glenn Danzig, an amazingly talented musician, sometimes called the Evil Elvis 🤘.

So Griffin’s physical appearance is based on young Glenn Danzig’s and the character in my mind has his hair, height, and body type. Not face, as he’s a different person and I can’t use someone’s likeness for illustrations. The personality is quite different, too.

That’s the look:

Can you recommend your readers any other books in case they are left hungry for more once they finish THE CUP AND THE PRINCE?

Oh, yes, readers who enjoy this book should read The Curse and the Prince. It should be coming up later in 2020. It’s book 2 in the series and you’ll find out what happens to Zora after… Well, after what happens in book 1.

Now, assuming you enjoyed my writing, I’d recommend Kissing Magic. It’s book 2 in the series Portals to Whyland but I find that readers who start with it end up reading the whole series and enjoying it. Readers who start with book 1, not so much. Hey, I don’t make the rules. 🤷

But I think you want me to recommend other writers, right? I always get stressed when it’s time to do that, fearing I’ll miss someone or suggest my writing is similar to someone’s. So my suggestion is for you to check the amazing bloggers in the tour and check their reviews and recommendations.

What would you say is the most difficult part of writing a book?

They can all be equally easy or difficult depending on whether the ideas are flowing naturally or not.

What’s next for you?

The Curse and the Prince, which is the sequel to The Cup and the Prince, and then the third book in the series Kingdom of Curses and Shadows, which doesn’t have a title yet.

Then I’ll start another YA fantasy series, but I haven’t decided anything yet.

The Opal Amulet (The Forbidden Gems of Regalia #1)

by Victoria Drozda
Publisher: BookBaby
Release Date: October 14th 2020
Genre: Young Adult, Contemporary, Fantasy
Goodreads | Amazon | BookDepository | B&N | BookBaby

Synopsis:

Fourteen year old Emberly Tollens doesn't dream often but when she does its never a good sign, especially when its the same dream. Some nights she would dream of the sweet nothingness of time. Other nights the voices would get louder, the running faster, and the staff colder. Ice cold. But this is just the beginning of her problems.

Things get even stranger when she finds a dangerously beautiful opal necklace lying on the ground at school. Not strange at all. And definitely not strange when your once kind of nice teacher turns into a fire-breathing creature from the past, right?

Now with the help of her hazel eyed friend named Olive and a cute mysterious fire throwing boy. They're going to discover there's a lot more going on than what they think.

Can you briefly describe THE OPAL AMULET and its characters?

The Opal Amulet is the first book to the series The Forbidden Gems of Regalia. It’s about a curly haired, star-flecked faced fourteen year old girl named Emberly Tollens. Who keeps having strange dreams about a staff as cold as ice and mysterious hooded man. And just happens to find a dangerously beautiful amulet at school. Definitely, not weird at all.
And totally not weird when your teacher turns into a fire breathing dragon from the past, right? But this is just the beginning of her problems. Now with the help of her best friend Olive. A tall, long haired girl with hazel eyes full of mischievous and sarcasm with a secret.
And Max Carnelian a cute fire throwing boy with eyes like stars with a seemingly picture perfect family that is anything but. They're going to discover there is a lot more going on than what they thought.

Who would you say is your favourite character from the story and why?

Max! Max Carnelian has always been my favorite character. I love his backstory, his family and the relationships he has with them. Pretty much, most of my favorite scenes and chapters are the ones that Max is in so far. When you read the chapters with him and his family in them you’ll understand why!

How did the story occur to you? Did you find inspiration anywhere?

A dream. The inspiration for the story was based on a dream I had during the summer before my freshman year of high school. In the dream I was running at a school and there was a girl with long black hair with me, but before I could figure out why we were running I woke up. It felt like it was a start to a story.
I always liked magic and objects that possess them like amulets. So having a magical amulet was a must have! The ability to control elements was a very interesting and intriguing idea to me. So I had to put elemental magic or powers in it. And dragons, because their dragons! Do I even need to say more? I wanted to put everything that I really enjoyed in a story and put it in this one.
I wrote this book for myself.

If you could choose one song to describe your book, which one would it be?

Hmm. That’s a tough one. Since there are certain songs that remind me of particular parts of the book or certain characters...but if I had to pick one it would be End of Time by K-391, Alan Walker and Ahrix. I think this song fits the overall series pretty well!

What drink and place do you think will go with your book to have a perfect book date?

It would have to fall. It would have to be at a place where you can see the leaves change color and the air is crisp. You would be surrounded by books with your favorite warm drink hand (mine would be hot chocolate) while watching the sun set. If possible in a tree house or a decorated attic with little lights that has a big window. But if you can’t do that just a comfy chair works too.

Can you recommend your readers any other books in case they are left hungry for more once they finish THE OPAL AMULET?

Well, here are some book series that I was reading while I was writing the book that I remember really enjoying. Although it's been a while since I read them and I still need to finish Keeper of the Lost Cities which is still going. I remember that they really inspired me!
Waterfire Saga series by Jennifer Donnelly
Keeper of the Lost Cities series by Shannon Messenger
Pegasus series by Kate O’Hearn

What would you say is the most difficult part of writing a book?

Well, for me the most difficult part of writing a book it’s always changing. Currently it’s just finding time to write. I've just started college and just haven’t been able to manage my time well enough to be able to write like I used to in high school. But not rushing and spelling are also things that I struggle with when writing too.

What’s next for you?

Writing the next book to the series and college. I’m rewriting/adding/editing the draft of the second book to the series right now. Well...that if I can find time.
