Synopsis:

For as long as Alice can remember, she has dreamed of Max. Together they have traveled the world and fallen deliriously, hopelessly in love. Max is the boy of her dreams—and only her dreams. Because he doesn’t exist.

But when Alice walks into class on her first day at a new school, there he is. It turns out, though, that Real Max is nothing like Dream Max, and getting to know each other in reality isn’t as perfect as Alice always hoped.

When their dreams start to bleed dangerously into their waking hours, the pair realize that they might have to put an end to a lifetime of dreaming about each other. But when you fall in love in your dreams, can reality ever be enough?

Name 3 fictional places you would move to in a heartbeat.

Pemberly Estate.

I’d love to spend a summer working in La Celeste Patisserie, the chocolate shop in Chocolat.

Who is your perfect fictional boyfriend?

I know its kind of cliché, but I am a sucker for Fitzwilliam Darcy. He is a little stiff, and not always very charming, but he’s steadfast and honorable, and loves Elizabeth fiercely. Still, I think he could be a bit better at communicating!! But hey, nobody is perfect.

Favorite Quote?

“Let’s just think of this as an adventure.” - My mother.

What do you find yourself “Fangirling” over?

I am really into music, particularly soundtracks. There are a few badass female music supervisors working in LA who have amazing taste in music and create truly awesome soundtracks for some of my favorite movies and TV shows. One is Alexandra Patsavas, the other is Liza Richardson. I’ve had the opportunity to meet Liza and completely freaked out talking music with her. If I met Alex, I’d probably pass out.

If you could meet one author, dead or alive, who would it be?

Patti Smith.

Something to say to our Book Addicts?

I really hope you like the book! It’s probably going to be weirder than you expect…

Could you tell our Book Addicts a little bit about Dreamology?

Dreamology is about a girl named Alice who has always had very vivid, very exciting dreams her whole life, where she goes on adventures with a boy named Max. Max and Alice are in love, but she has never actually met him in real life. She thinks she made him up. Until she moves back to Boston, the town where she was born, and runs into him at her new school. The book is about Max and Alice trying to figure out what their dreams mean, and also about them getting to know each other – their true selves – in real life.

What can you tell us about Alice and Max? And how different they are in real life from the person they met in their dreams?

In the dreams, anything is possible, and whatever weight Alice and Max carry in reality ceases to exist. For that reason they are almost always the best versions of themselves – happy and carefree, without responsibility. In their waking hours, Alice prefers to stay in that world. She is literally a dreamer, and prefers to ignore her problems. Max, however, is trying desperately to make his way without depending on the dreams. He’s a little freaked out by Alice showing up, and he doesn’t exactly handle it very well.

How did you come up with the story? Did you find inspiration in any other story/movie/show and how has this affected your writing?

A good night’s sleep has always been a luxury for me. Vivid dreams, nightmares, walking, talking, waking up in the night standing in another room. My curiosity has never been directed to what my dreams mean, but rather I’ve always been fascinated by why we dream at all.

Like many of us, I have also had dreams about people I have loved or cared for, and even if I haven’t seen them in years, they are so real to me in the dream. I realized there is an interesting metaphor between love and dreaming. In both cases we behave strangely, act in ways we never would otherwise. The musician Father John Misty has a quote from one of his love songs that, referring to how insane love can make you, says: “If this isn’t true love someone ought to put me in a home.” And with love, as with dreams, when a relationship and a dream end, we often ask ourselves…did that even happen?

I kept imagining a story where a girl met a boy in her dreams who she had never seen before. And I wanted those dreams to – for once – mean something in reality.

Some of the people who have influenced me over the years: Sloan Crosley, Helen Fielding, The Duplass Brothers, Wes Anderson, Spike Jonze. I like characters who are full, flawed, and real, but also a little bit surprising and strange.

Tell us your favorite quote from Dreamology.

“I have every part of his face mapped in my brain, all of his mannerisms. I am constantly afraid of forgetting him.”

Or

“It surprises me, how a gesture so small can feel so very big. How sometimes you don’t realize the nervousness or sadness you were holding deep inside until the touch of someone you love lets it all out of you, like your entire body is exhaling.”

Is there a specific scene that you had the most fun to write?

I loved writing the chapters at the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum. That place has so much magic in it, so to actually write some magical scenes there felt incredible.

If you had to pick one song to be the Theme Song for Dreamology – Which one would you pick?

Pictures of You by The Cure

Imagine that we get to see your book on the big screen (how awesome would that be?). Who would you pick to play your characters?

Teenage versions of the following people:

Alice – Imogen Poots or Skyler Samuels

Max – Grant Gustin and Graham Phillips have always kind of tied for this.

Oliver – Charlie Hunnam – but not the scary Sons of Anarchy Charlie. The Charlie from Undeclared, a little known TV series from a few years ago.

Celeste – Olivia Munn

Sophie – Jenny Slate

And also:

Alice’s Dad – Greg Kinnear

Gustave Petermann – Bill Murray

Are there any recommendations you could give your readers to be in the “perfect mood” to read Dreamology (specific music, snacks…)?

I have a playlist coming out soon, which you can access on my Spotify. Definitely check that out!! And let’s just say, I think you will probably want to have some Oreos on hand :)

What would you say is the perfect date for you?

I’ve never been a person who needs to be taken to the nicest restaurant in town. Like Alice and Max, I like to go on adventures together. The perfect date for me would probably be catching my favorite band, then going to a late dinner after so we could talk about everything we loved a the show. Or just a day spent walking around in a cool city, eating good food, poking around stores, taking in a view.

What’s next for you?

I’m finishing up my second book and I can’t wait to share it with everyone! But you’ll have to wait a little while longer for that. What I can tell you is that I plan to stick to stories that are contemporary, and very romantic, but still a little strange.

Thank you so much for everything, Lucy!
