What Makes Patri

Six Angry Girls

by Adrienne Kisner
Publisher: Feiwel & Friends
Release Date: August 18th 2020
Genre: Young Adult, Contemporary, Feminism, LGBT, Feminism, Queer, Realistic Fiction, Gay, Asexual
Goodreads | Amazon | B&N | iTunes | Bookdepository | Kobo | Google Books

Synopsis:

A story of mock trial, feminism, and the inherent power found in a pair of knitting needles.

Raina Petree is crushing her senior year, until her boyfriend dumps her, the drama club (basically) dumps her, the college of her dreams slips away, and her arch-nemesis triumphs.

Things aren’t much better for Millie Goodwin. Her father treats her like a servant, and the all-boy Mock Trial team votes her out, even after she spent the last three years helping to build its success.

But then, an advice columnist unexpectedly helps Raina find new purpose in a pair of knitting needles and a politically active local yarn store. This leads to an unlikely meeting in the girls’ bathroom, where Raina inspires Millie to start a rival team. The two join together and recruit four other angry girls to not only take on Mock Trial, but to smash the patriarchy in the process.

Can you briefly describe SIX ANGRY GIRLS and its characters?

SIX ANGRY GIRLS is a story about mock trial and the power of fiber arts. POV character Millie is driven and single-minded; POV character Raina is a drama queen trying to find herself; Grace is self-assured and kind; Veronica is a fierce competitor, Izzy is grounded and determined, and Nikita cares a lot more than she lets on. All of them are angry.

Could you describe your story with emojis?

😡 💔 ⛰ 🏳️‍🌈 🧶 ⚖

Who would you say is your favourite character from the story and why?

Hmmmm. How can I pick?! Probably Millie. She and I have a lot in common. We both need to calm down. But our heart is in the right place.

How did the story occur to you? Did you find inspiration anywhere?

I was doing an event with the fabulous advice columnist Meredith Goldstein. I asked her how she doesn’t just tell the lovelorn to get a hobby. She was all about “compassion” and “really listening” or something impractical like that. I feel heartbreak is best met with learning a new skill. Thus, Raina was born.

If you could choose one song to describe your book, which one would it be?

I Will Survive, by Gloria Gayner

What drink and place do you think will go with your book to have a perfect book date?

A reusable 64-ounce container of water to keep hydrated during the march on city hall.

Can you recommend your readers any other books in case they are left hungry for more once they finish SIX ANGRY GIRLS?

Well, I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention DEAR RACHEL MADDOW or THE CONFUSION OF LAUREL GRAHAM by yours truly. But others I loved (I love a lot of books . . .) were DEAR MARTIN by Nic Stone, MOXIE by Jennifer Mathieu, FULL DISCLOSURE by Camryn Garrett, AMELIA WESTLAKE WAS NEVER HERE by Erin Gough, THE VOTING BOOTH by Brandy Colbert, TELL ME HOW YOU REALLY FEEL by Amina Mae Safi, and THE DEGENERATES J. Albert Mann. Also I want to give a shout out to my former mentee, Jessica Kim, whose book STAND UP, YUMI CHUNG! is amazing for the younger set.

What would you say is the most difficult part of writing a book?

Hmmm. Probably finding the time and mental space in this world to do it!

What’s next for you?

I’m working on a couple of things at the moment. Right now, I’m focused on a book called TIME CARD about a seventeen-year-old poet turned reluctant union organizer.

Adrienne Kisner has lived her entire “adult” life in a college dormitory working in both Residence Life and college chaplaincy. (She prefers the term “dormitory” over “residence hall.” Don’t @ her.) She went to school for a long time so that now she gets to swoop around in a fancy robe and silly hat (like at Hogwarts). She also has an MFA in Writing for Children and Young Adults from Vermont College of Fine Arts (a place like Hogwarts). Adrienne is a birder and knitter with more heart and enthusiasm than actual skill. Her debut novel DEAR RACHEL MADDOW won a 2016 PEN New England Susan P Bloom Discovery Award and was one of YALSA’s 2019 picks for Best Fiction for Young Adults. Her second novel, THE CONFUSION OF LAUREL GRAHAM, will be released in June of 2019. Book three, SIX ANGRY GIRLS, is due out in the spring of 2020. She loves her current home in Boston but will always be a Pennsylvanian at heart.

Entwined

by A.J. Rosen
Publisher: Wattpad Books
Release Date: August 25th 2020
Genre: Young Adult, Romance
Goodreads | Amazon | B&N | iTunes | BookDepository | Kobo | Google Play

Synopsis:

Sometimes love gets a bit twisted.

Avery Montgomery doesn’t even know if she wants a soul mate.

As a member of the Hellenicus—a race founded in antiquity and descended directly from the Greek gods—Avery’s attending her first Gathering where she’ll gain the ability to entwine her thoughts with her destined soul mate and be tied to them forever.

But all is not as it seems at the Royal Court. There are severe and strange looks from the elders, whisperings from the ancient Dodona tree, and encounters with spirits who seem to know Avery better than she knows herself.

Throughout these whirlwind events at Court, Avery finds herself torn between her feelings for the wise and protective Vladimir and the passionate, fun-loving Adrian. Unwilling to surrender her independence or to betray her heart, Avery must decide once and for all if she’ll give in to her desires and risk the wrath of the Gods.

Because who are you if your destiny lies with another person?

Entwined is a young adult novel full of Greek mythology, soulmates, a love triangle and a mystery.

The story starts explaining us the Greek mythology story about how humans, gods and demi-gods where created. What happened in order to get a social ranking between demi-gods and why the Gods gave these demi-gods the chance to find their other half. We can find the following status:

↠Pure Royals - descended from Zeus, Poseidon, or Hades
↠Royals - descended from any of the major gods on Mount Olympus
↠Regulars - descended from the minor gods & who went against the Gods at some point in an epic battle.

While you instantly may think "oh, that's quite romantic" it can be quite the opposite. Moreover, our main character, Avery Montgomery thinks this "gift" is more like a "curse". While everyone teaches the demi-gods' kids that finding their soulmate is a privilege, Avery has had pretty bad experiences from seeing her parents fight constantly as well as her neighbours splitting up despite being soulmates and the guy getting together with another woman while his wife was in a coma.

Rosen's concept of the soulmates was pretty interesting to me because not only you find your other half and everything is suppose to make sense from that moment, but you share all your thoughts with your other half and they, obviously, can hear yours. So in the story, the main character poses the critical question of what happens when being someone's soulmate doesn't work. What do you do then? Her experience so far has been seeing people suffering, so she has always had plans to escape her destiny.

Within this story line of wanting to avoid her destiny, we have the mystery of Avery hearing the sacred tree at court speak, people acting weird around her and being followed, the three ladies at court who keep looking at her (lowkey, my theory is that they are the Fates) and the fact that there's a sort of terrorist group called the Faction who where the ones who ended up being punished by the Gods for killing all the descendants of Hades.

If you are wondering where the love triangle fits in all this story, I can't really tell you without giving you a massive spoiler. But believe me, it's there and you will see it coming half-way through the book.

The story has substance and has a lot of potential to develop into one of those mind-blowing series where you cannot put down until you have finished all the books. To me, my only complaint would be the characters. There's no development throughout the story. The start and finish being the same. However, if my theories are correct and if the author publishes a second novel, I think this would be quite easily fixed.

I honestly couldn't put this book down and it was the first Young Adult novel I had read after a very long reading slump. I think this just speaks for itself. While I wouldn't say Entwined is a masterpiece, it is indeed one of my favourite reads of 2020 and I will keep annoying Rosen until we have a continuation because I am going crazy with my theories at this point!

For anyone concerned about the content, it is quite a pretty clean YA novel. There's a few kisses and references to the main characters feelings, but that's about it.

In conclusion, just read Entwined if you enjoy sweet stories about soulmates, with mysteries and twists and turns. Also, I hope you are team Vlad whenever you finish the novel.

I received an ARC of the book from Smith Publicity and Wattpad Books in order to provide an honest review.

Emmie and the Tudor Queen (Hearts and Crowns Book 2)

by Natalie Murray
Release Date: August 25th 2020
Genre: Young Adult, Historical Fiction, Romance
Goodreads | Amazon | B&N | Kobo | Google Books

Synopsis:

True love has never been more deadly in this lush sequel to the best-selling Emmie and the Tudor King.

For an extraordinary love, Emmie Grace has given up her life in the modern world to move to the sixteenth century and marry the Tudor king she bravely saved from a dreadful fate. However, not everyone is pleased to see the glorious King Nick betrothed to the unknown and uncultured Emmie—especially the noblemen commanded to protect her.

As Emmie is drawn deeper into Nick’s sumptuous and savage world—where beheadings are way more popular than time travelers—the Tudor court heads on progress across the country, and a growing rebellion against the promised queen looms.

With life and love at stake, Emmie must face the cost of changing the path of history and realize that her greatest sacrifice is yet to come.

Can you briefly describe EMMIE AND THE TUDOR QUEEN and its characters?

Sure! Emmie and the Tudor Queen is the sequel to Emmie and the Tudor King. These are the first two books in the Hearts & Crowns series, which follows an eighteen-year-old girl called Emmie Grace back in time to sixteenth-century Tudor England, where she meets a dreamy, but ill-fated, Tudor king. Emmie is about to graduate high school and has college plans, while the Tudor king (Nick) is trying to keep his country under control in Renaissance Europe, which is on the brink of a holy war. Other characters who join this star-crossed love story include Emmie’s mom who has no idea her daughter is a time traveler, a dangerous duke who’d like to see Emmie’s head on a pike, and the nobles of the Tudor court who can make Emmie’s time there either delightful or deadly.

Could you describe your story with emojis?

💏✈🏰😈😦💏✈🏙✈🏰🍽💃😈😭🧙🔫😡😢😘👰🔥👑⚔😱🧙🤒⚰💔💂🔫😭😳🤴☹😡😓😘💏✈

Who would you say is your favourite character from the story and why?

It’s hard to get past Emmie and Nick, but I think the character I would hate to lose the most apart from those two would be Alice Grey, Emmie’s best friend in the Tudor world. I adore Alice for her feminist tendencies (as feminist as a sixteenth-century girl can be!), fierce devotion to Emmie, and her witty banter.

How did the story occur to you? Did you find inspiration anywhere?

The story came to me from a dream I had, in which I basically was Emmie Grace: I was a girl from the twenty-first century who had the ability to travel back and forth in time to the Tudor era. I was also heavily inspired by my interest in this dramatic period of history, and the hot mess that is the Tudor family tree, but I didn’t want to write a book about Henry VIII, his wives, or Elizabeth I. There are enough of those already! I wanted to create a fictional Tudor king in a reimagining of the dynasty, but one who was inspired by a young Henry VIII (Henry VIII wasn’t always the obese, grouchy king so many people think of – in his younger years, he was known to be incredibly handsome, athletic, and charismatic).

If you could choose one song to describe your book, which one would it be?

It would undoubtedly be the song ‘The Beauty and the Tragedy’ by Trading Yesterday, which perfectly captures the tortured angst between Nick and Emmie. To give you an idea, some of the lyrics are: “Watch your step, our love is broken. I am every tear you cry. Save your breath, your heart has spoken. You already have my life. For I am finding out that love will kill and save me. Taking the dreams that made me up, and tearing them away. But the same love will take this heart that’s barely beating… and fill it with hope beyond the stars.” I thoroughly recommend listening to this gorgeous song about love and heartbreak.

If your book was going to be made into a movie, who would play your characters?

This changes, but at the moment it would be Cailee Spaeny as Emmie Grace, Louis Hunter as Nick Tudor, Daisy Edgar-Jones as Alice Grey, Frank Dillane as Francis Beaumont, Pierce Brosnan as the Duke of Norfolk, Olivia Holt as Lucinda Parker, Ellise Chappell as Bridget Nightingale, Toni Collette as Carol Grace, Vera Farmiga as Jane Stuart, and Raffiella Chapman as Princess Catherine. J

What drink and place do you think will go with your book to have a perfect book date?

I think the perfect place to take Emmie and the Tudor Queen for a book date would be a Tudor or Elizabethan palace! It would be lovely to sit reading it on a stone bench within one of the courtyards of Hampton Court Palace, or on a grassy hill overlooking Kenilworth Castle. For a drink, perhaps I’d have a glass of red wine because the Tudors did enjoy their wine (and ale). One thing they didn’t drink was tea! That quintessential English beverage was introduced nearly one hundred years after this story is set.

Can you recommend your readers any other books in case they are left hungry for more once they finish EMMIE AND THE TUDOR QUEEN?

If you enjoyed Emmie and the Tudor Queen, my first suggestion would be to read Emmie and the Tudor King if you haven’t already! This is the original book in the series that explains how Emmie and Nick come together in the first place. If you’ve already finished and liked them, that probably means you’d appreciate some time travel romance or Tudor romance. If you haven’t read Outlander, that’s a must-read, or you can also delve into some romantic Tudor books, of which there are many. You can explore some of the Philippa Gregory novels or My Lady Jane, a fun book set in the sixteenth century that has a contemporary feel.

What would you say is the most difficult part of writing a book?

I’m tempted to say the time involved (there are too many hours to count!), but I think the plotting is the most challenging part for me. It’s no easy task to make it through eighty thousand or more words while keeping the reader engaged. This requires complex thought and clever planning to keep the story moving forward cohesively and convincingly without losing the reader along the way. I get heart palpitations just thinking about it! Ha.

What’s next for you?

I’m undecided! I have a contemporary romance that’s been brewing in my mind for some time, and I’d like to get it down on paper before the idea shrinks away. However, there is one more book in the Hearts & Crowns series that I’d like to write to bring the story to a conclusion, but bets are currently on as to which book I end up completing first. :)

Thank you very much for having me!

Mari loves Camp Chemo—where she’s developed a healthy crush on fellow camper Jase. At Camp, she knows that she’ll never get “the look” or have to explain her amputation to anyone.

Jase wants to move on, to never reveal his past. But when Mari transfers to his school, he knows she could blow his cover. That’s the last thing he wants, but he also cannot ignore his attraction to her. For Mari, she only wants to be looked at like a girl, a person, and not only known for her disability. Kati is a recovering actor who has spent the last few years keeping tiny humans alive. In high school she was determined to play a doctor on General Hospital and possibly add in a love story with Jonathan Jackson. She would spend hours toiling away on FanFiction for my AOL community and dreaming of the day she would accept a Daytime Emmy Award. In college she majored in Theater arts and spent lots of time hanging out in the box office.

Before any of that happened though, Kati had cancer. She was eight. She responded to chemotherapy and had an amputation of her entire left leg. She still advocates for childhood cancer research and accessibility for all individual with disabilities.

Kati is married, has two great girls, and a posse of furry friends. She doesn't watch General Hospital anymore, but still thinks that Lucky Spencer is one of the most dynamic characters ever written.

Roaring

by Lindsey Duga
Publisher: Entangled Publishing, LLC (Teen)
Release Date: August 3rd 2020
Genre: Young Adult, Fantasy, Historical Fiction, Paranormal
Goodreads | Amazon | B&N | Kobo | Google Play

Synopsis:

Colt Clemmons is an agent in a specialized division within the Bureau of Investigation—one that hunts down not just mobsters, but also monsters.

For reasons that are kept top secret, Colt is the only person who can resist a siren's voice. But he's never had a chance to test this ability. The last siren left in the world mysteriously disappeared years ago.

Then one night, with a single word, she reveals herself. It seems too good to be true.

And it is. Because nothing about this siren—her past, her powers, or her purpose—is what it seems...

Can you briefly describe ROARING and its characters?

Since she was a child, Eris has been told to keep quiet. The only time she is allowed to use her voice is on the smoky, soft-lit stage of Helena Maldu’s speakeasy, The Blind Dragon. Her songs ensnare patrons, and keep them coming back–which is good business. But her safe, yet mundane, life is gone with the drop of a mic when a handsome young hunter walks into her bar.

Colt Clemmons is an agent of a specialized division of the Bureau of Investigation–a division that hunts down not just mobsters, but monsters. And a certain sweet-faced siren masquerading as a waitress is his next target. Only, when he meets Eris, she’s not at all what Colt was expecting, and he’s forced to decide for himself whether or not she deserves the fate that the government has in store for her.

But someone else is hunting the lost siren as well. Her mysterious creator is after her voice for the power that it possesses and will stop at nothing to get his monster back. As Colt and Eris evade his monstrous henchmen at every turn, a darker, more sinister plot begins to unfold, and with it, effects that will send shockwaves across the nation.

Could you describe your story with emojis?

🧜🎙🛤😈🐉💰

Who would you say is your favourite character from the story and why?

While I love both Colt and Eris, I have a special place in my heart for Stanley, the bartender at The Blind Dragon. He’s modelled slightly after my favorite thriller hero: Jack Reacher. Being an ex-military cop, he’s strong and capable, and he also cares deeply for Eris. He’s like an uncle to her and would do practically anything to keep her safe. How can you not love such a stand-up guy?

How did the story occur to you? Did you find inspiration anywhere?

The idea of ROARING was very simple at first. I wanted to write a book in the 1920s and I had it in my head that I wanted the main character to be a singer in a speakeasy. But what gave it that special twist? What made it fantastical and not just historical? Then came the idea of using one of my favorite things ever--mythology. What if she was a siren? That monster in Greek myths that lured sailors to their deaths. That’s when I realized I had a book...a siren in a speakeasy! Her siren song could lure patrons to her bar and keep them coming back, which is, of course, good for business.

If you could choose one song to describe your book, which one would it be?

My Love Will Never Die by AG, Claire Wyndham

A song featured in the season finale of one of my favorite shows: Lucifer! Gosh, I loved that scene so much. It’s haunting, devastating, and strangely otherworldly. I thought it was the perfect song for my two characters and how they feel for each other, along with the dark netherworld they’re trapped in.

If your book was going to be made into a movie, who would play your characters?

Holland Roden (Lydia from Teen Wolf) would be Eris—hands down. She has the beauty and innocence that is needed for Eris. And she plays scared really well, haha.

Colt would have to be played by Taron Egerton. I would accept no one else! His square jaw and handsome smirk (swoon) would be perfect for Colt. Plus, he plays a secret agent really well. Kingsmen, anyone?

What drink and place do you think will go with your book to have a perfect book date?

There’s a very noir bar in my town called “Hayride Scandal”. It has plush armchairs and chintz sofas and bartenders that wear suspenders. They also have a jazz band that plays every Thursday night and a pianist on the weekend. I’d camp out there in a back corner and order a “bee sting smash” a mixed drink with honey whiskey. And then I’d pretend that I actually was in The Blind Dragon!

Can you recommend your readers any other books in case they are left hungry for more once they finish ROARING?

The Diviners by Libba Bray – A demon is unleashed in the Jazz Age. Paranormal powers set in the 1920s.

This Savage Song by Victoria Schwab – Amazing tale of humans and monsters and what makes us all real monsters.

Born of Illusion by Teri Brown – Daughter of Harry Houdini! How fun is that? Set in the 1920s.

What would you say is the most difficult part of writing a book?

The ending! It never fails, I always rush through writing the ending because I’m so close to being done and then my editor tells me “we could draw out the ending a little more.” It’s a trap I fall into every time!

What’s next for you?

I’m currently working on another YA paranormal! This one is a contemporary setting with a hero who can control thunder and lightning. That’s right–it’s gonna be a STORMY romance!
