Review - Entwined by A.J. Rosen
Genre: Young Adult, Romance
Synopsis:
Sometimes love gets a bit twisted.
Avery Montgomery doesn’t even know if she wants a soul mate.
As a member of the Hellenicus—a race founded in antiquity and descended directly from the Greek gods—Avery’s attending her first Gathering where she’ll gain the ability to entwine her thoughts with her destined soul mate and be tied to them forever.
But all is not as it seems at the Royal Court. There are severe and strange looks from the elders, whisperings from the ancient Dodona tree, and encounters with spirits who seem to know Avery better than she knows herself.
Throughout these whirlwind events at Court, Avery finds herself torn between her feelings for the wise and protective Vladimir and the passionate, fun-loving Adrian. Unwilling to surrender her independence or to betray her heart, Avery must decide once and for all if she’ll give in to her desires and risk the wrath of the Gods.
Because who are you if your destiny lies with another person?
Entwined is a young adult novel full of Greek mythology, soulmates, a love triangle and a mystery.
The story starts explaining us the Greek mythology story about how humans, gods and demi-gods where created. What happened in order to get a social ranking between demi-gods and why the Gods gave these demi-gods the chance to find their other half. We can find the following status:
↠Pure Royals - descended from Zeus, Poseidon, or Hades
↠Royals - descended from any of the major gods on Mount Olympus
↠Regulars - descended from the minor gods & who went against the Gods at some point in an epic battle.
While you instantly may think "oh, that's quite romantic" it can be quite the opposite. Moreover, our main character, Avery Montgomery thinks this "gift" is more like a "curse". While everyone teaches the demi-gods' kids that finding their soulmate is a privilege, Avery has had pretty bad experiences from seeing her parents fight constantly as well as her neighbours splitting up despite being soulmates and the guy getting together with another woman while his wife was in a coma.
Rosen's concept of the soulmates was pretty interesting to me because not only you find your other half and everything is suppose to make sense from that moment, but you share all your thoughts with your other half and they, obviously, can hear yours. So in the story, the main character poses the critical question of what happens when being someone's soulmate doesn't work. What do you do then? Her experience so far has been seeing people suffering, so she has always had plans to escape her destiny.
Within this story line of wanting to avoid her destiny, we have the mystery of Avery hearing the sacred tree at court speak, people acting weird around her and being followed, the three ladies at court who keep looking at her (lowkey, my theory is that they are the Fates) and the fact that there's a sort of terrorist group called the Faction who where the ones who ended up being punished by the Gods for killing all the descendants of Hades.
If you are wondering where the love triangle fits in all this story, I can't really tell you without giving you a massive spoiler. But believe me, it's there and you will see it coming half-way through the book.
The story has substance and has a lot of potential to develop into one of those mind-blowing series where you cannot put down until you have finished all the books. To me, my only complaint would be the characters. There's no development throughout the story. The start and finish being the same. However, if my theories are correct and if the author publishes a second novel, I think this would be quite easily fixed.
I honestly couldn't put this book down and it was the first Young Adult novel I had read after a very long reading slump. I think this just speaks for itself. While I wouldn't say Entwined is a masterpiece, it is indeed one of my favourite reads of 2020 and I will keep annoying Rosen until we have a continuation because I am going crazy with my theories at this point!
For anyone concerned about the content, it is quite a pretty clean YA novel. There's a few kisses and references to the main characters feelings, but that's about it.
In conclusion, just read Entwined if you enjoy sweet stories about soulmates, with mysteries and twists and turns. Also, I hope you are team Vlad whenever you finish the novel.
I received an ARC of the book from Smith Publicity and Wattpad Books in order to provide an honest review.
