What Makes Patri

Hi beautiful bookish people!

Today I have partnered with BOMM Tours to show you the cover of FATE OF THE VULTURE by Jessaca Willis, third book in the Reapers of Veltuur.

Fate of the Vulture (Reapers of Veltuur #3)

by Jessaca Willis
Release Date: December 14th 2020
Genre: Fantasy, Paranormal

Synopsis:

A girl with a destiny. The prince she's desperate to save. And the Gods standing in her way.

Sinisa Strigidae has never been normal. She’s spent the last three years of her life as a Reaper, a slave to the underrealm. When she finally freed herself, it wasn’t to return to an ordinary mortal life, but to become a Guardian, an empowered being forgotten by almost all of mankind.

But now she discovers she’s even more than that.

She's prophesized.

An ancient prophecy, foretold by the very Divinity of Fate herself, proclaims that Sinisa will be the one to defeat Veltuur, ruler of the underrealm.

But Sinisa has only just escape his clutches and is trying to reclaim her life. Her path is her own now and she’s not so eager to return to the place that kept her imprisoned.

But her dear friend, King Acari, is still trapped there, and she would do anything to see him freed, even if it means going against one of the Gods.

Nevernight meets Reign of the Fallen in this dark saga about a female assassin who wields not a blade, but death itself.

Kingdom of Ice and Bone (Frozen Sun Saga #2)

by Jill Criswell
Publisher: Blackstone Publishing
Release Date: September 22nd 2020
Genre: Young Adult, Fantasy, Fiction
Goodreads | Amazon | B&N | iTunes | Bookdepository | Kobo | Google Books

Synopsis:

Lira and Reyker have lost everything. Including each other.

Lira of Stone watched her home burn and her clan fall beneath the sword of the warlord known as the Dragon. She believes the man she loves, a warrior who defected from the Dragon s army, is dead. Alongside her exiled brother and his band of refugees, she will fight the forces that conquered her island. But the greatest danger may come from Lira herself with the blood of banished gods running through her veins, she s become a weapon, and no one is safe from the power of her wrath.

Reyker Lagorsson thought he was done being a Dragonman. That was before he saw Lira leap from a cliff and vanish into the sea. Determined to honor her memory by protecting her people, Reyker must feign loyalty to the warlord, undermine him at every turn, and seek alliances with renegade soldiers without succumbing to the battle-madness that threatens to possess him once more.

When the Fallen Ones offer Lira a chance to defeat the Dragon, her quest leads her to a place she never expected Iseneld, the warlord s homeland. Her journey into the heart of the Frozen Sun will put her on a collision course with Reyker, costing both of them more than they ever imagined, and leaving her with a terrible choice: to save their countries, she must forsake everything she loves.

Can you briefly describe KINGDOM OF ICE AND BONE, the series and its characters?

Kingdom of Ice & Bone is the sequel to Beasts of the Frozen Sun, and it picks up where the first book left off, with Lira and Reyker separated and each thinking the other is dead.

Lira is a god-gifted daughter of Glasnith. She barely escaped from the vicious warlord Draki, who destroyed her village, and she owes her life to a host of vengeful gods; now, she’s struggling to control the dark powers they forced upon her.

Reyker, a warrior from Iseneld who suffers from battle-madness, was devoted to Lira after she saved his life. Now, he’s trying to find a way to protect her island from Draki, and the only way to do it is to pretend to be one of Draki’s loyal warriors.

Both Lira and Reyker are ensnared by Draki’s schemes. They find themselves in Iseneld, journeying across its frozen heart, unwittingly headed on a collision course with a monstrous goddess, and facing a terrible choice: to save their countries, they must lose each other and give up their souls to the dark gifts threatening to devour them.

Could you describe your story with emojis?

⚔️ ⛵ 🧊 🌋 🏰 ❤️ 🐉 ☠️ 💔

Who would you say is your favourite character from the story and why?

So I love Lira and Reyker, obviously, but Draki really hooked me in the sequel. He finally gets his chance to show us he’s more than the cartoon villain he pretends to be—there’s depth to him that we didn’t get to see in the first book, and I really enjoyed fleshing out his character.

How did the story occur to you? Did you find inspiration anywhere? How was the process different from the 1st book?

The first book, Beasts of the Frozen Sun, was inspired by my travels in Iceland—which is the basis for the fictional country of Iseneld in the series. In Beasts, we only see Iseneld in flashbacks, but in Kingdom, our main characters finally make it there. I was able to include a lot of settings based on real places in Iceland, and that scenery was a huge inspiration.

Writing the sequel was definitely different. The first book sort of wanders, and a lot of the focus is on Lira and Reyker’s budding romance. In the sequel, the characters are separated; there’s a lot more focus on their individual missions—Lira learning to use her newly-acquired gifts, Reyker forming an alliance with a renegade army—and on their strange relationships with the warlord, Draki.

If you could choose one song to describe your book, which one would it be?

I have a whole playlist for the book, but the song on the playlist that best captures the overall theme of the book is “Who Will Save You Now” by Les Friction. (Check out the lyrics, and that epic, movie-finale sound, and you’ll see what I mean.)

If your book was going to be made into a movie, who would play your characters?

If it was being made today, this would be my dream cast:

Emma Watson as Lira

Nicholas Hoult as Reyker

Alexander Skarsgård as Draki

Bob Morley as Garreth

Torrance Coombs as Quinlan

Zazie Beetz as Zabelle

Ricky Whittle as Brokk

Elizabeth Debicki as Solvei

What drink and place do you think will go with your book to have a perfect book date?

I think sitting by a fire, drinking a Black and Tan made of Guinness and Viking Gylltur, on a rainy day, in a place where you can see the gray waters of the Atlantic out the window would be just about perfect. But if you can’t make that happen, having a picture of Reynisfjara on a foggy day to look at also works.

Can you recommend your readers any other books in case they are left hungry for more once they finish KINGDOM OF ICE AND BONE?

A Goodreads reviewer called my series the love child between Juliet Marillier’s Daughter of the Forest and Adrienne Young’s Sky in the Deep, which I took as a huge compliment and feel is spot on. Juliet Marillier’s Wolf Skin was another big influence on the series. Other fantasy series I love that readers might not be familiar with are the Given duology by Mindy McGinnis and the Traitor’s Circle by Erin Beaty.

What would you say is the most difficult part of writing a book?

It depends on the book. With the first book in a series, it’s hardest for me to figure out who my characters are and what they want—where I start the book is never where the story ends up, which takes lots of revision to fix. For a sequel, the hardest part for me is tying up all the loose ends while moving the story forward. For a finale, ending things in a way that feels epic, inevitable, and satisfying can be tough. When the final book in the Frozen Sun Saga comes out next year, you all can be the judge of whether or not I pulled it off!

What’s next for you?

I’ll be finishing up edits on the finale in the Frozen Sun Saga in the next few months, and it should be out fall of 2021. Beyond that, I’ve got one finished young adult fantasy I’m hoping to get published—I like to describe it as Uglies meets Rebel of the Sands, which sounds really weird, but hopefully interesting—and another I’m halfway done writing that’s about three competitors fighting to become the next leader of their country, perfect for fans of Three Dark Crowns.

The Bro Code

by Elizabeth A. Seibert
Publisher: Wattpad Books
Release Date: September 22nd 2020
Genre: Young Adult, Contemporary, Romance, Fiction
Goodreads | Amazon | B&N | iTunes | BookDepository | Kobo | Google Books

Synopsis:

As a certified stand-up bro, Nick Maguire knows that some things in life are sacred: Do not skip ab workouts. Never back down from spicy foods. And always accept the outcome of Rock, Paper, Scissors. For these are the revered doctrines of The Bro Code, rules of conduct that have been passed down through the ages from bro to bro.

Heading into his senior year, Cassidy High’s star soccer player has his priorities straight and intends to spend his time playing sports, hanging out, and living by the code. But when his best bro Carter’s sister Eliza returns from studying overseas, the awkward, academic girl Nick remembers is different.

Carter might be Nick’s bro, but Eliza becomes his whole world—and he has to make a choice between them. Is being with the girl of your dreams worth breaking the most important rule: never date your best friend’s sister? Somehow, Nick never expected that following The Bro Code may have even bigger consequences than breaking it.

Can you briefly describe THE BRO CODE and its characters?

I wrote The Bro Code to be a satirical critique of “bro culture” that is accessible through a romantic comedy/coming-of-age story. It focuses on Nick, a “bad boy” bro who navigates his senior year of high school and whether or not to break The Bro Code for his best friend’s sister, Eliza. (The Bro Code specifically says bros are not to date their friends’ sisters.)

The main “bros” are Nick, Carter, and Austin. They are all hyperathletic, popular guys on the soccer team, love video games and country music, and are addicted to pizza and attention from girls. They also live by The Bro Code.

Carter is the most studious and responsible of the three, whereas Austin is the most reckless. Nick falls in the middle. Eliza is Carter’s slightly younger sister who is “off-limits” and Nick’s love interest. She is very studious, plays volleyball, and loves to paint.

Could you describe your story with emojis?
😎⚽🍕

Who would you say is your favourite character from the story and why?

I actually like Madison the best. Madison is a more minor character who is Nick’s love interest at the beginning of the story. She is really sassy and unafraid to go after what she wants, which I respect about her. Of the bros, Nick is my favourite; I’m very proud of him for how he develops through the story. (Can I say that? 😊)

How did the story occur to you? Did you find inspiration anywhere?

I had heard of “the bro code” from a TV show, How I Met Your Mother, and the blatant sexism of it frustrated me, but I noticed that the TV show flaunted it through humour. I thought I could try that, too, but to have the opposite message (reverse sexism).

The rules of The Bro Code were inspired by past guys at my high school and current teenagers. I noted some of the ridiculous things they did—like making fun of each other not liking spicy foods—and turned those into the code.

If you could choose one song to describe your book, which one would it be?

“The Boys are Back in Town” by Thin Lizzy (and not just because my name is Lizzie 😊).

If your book was going to be made into a movie, who would play your characters?

Nick – Graham Phillips

Carter – George Sear

Austin – Noah Centineo

Eliza – Florence Pugh

Madison – Katelyn Nacon

What drink and place do you think will go with your book to have a perfect book date?

It’s gotta be a pizza place. (You’ll understand why when you read the book!)

For the drink…let’s go with a root beer float.

Can you recommend your readers any other books in case they are left hungry for more once they finish THE BRO CODE?

Similar books to The Bro Code are The Kissing Booth by Beth Reekles and The Upside of Falling by Alex Light. (Also, To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before by Jenny Han.)

Other young adult books I love are One of Us Is Lying by Karen M. McManus, The Cheerleaders by Kara Thomas, and the Mistborn trilogy by Brandon Sanderson.

What would you say is the most difficult part of writing a book?

Honestly, having people read it! It feels like a book will never be “perfect” enough for the world to read, and the truth is that it won’t be. Authors have to be okay with letting the story be as it is and sharing it anyway. It’s also important to remember that not everyone is going to like your book, no matter how “good” it is.

What’s next for you?

For the next two years I’ll be finishing up my courses at Harvard. I write screenplays as well as novels, and I’ll continue to hone those skills. I hope my career as a writer will be to explore social issues through fun and accessible stories.

I’m also currently working on a romantic thriller that explores the dark side of fairy tales. Very exciting! Title TBD.

Take My Throne (Boys of King Academy #3)
by Louise Rose, G. Bailey
Release Date: September 10th, 2020
Genre: Contemporary, Adult, Reverse Harem
Goodreads | Amazon

Synopsis:

King Academy has fallen with its elite and I’m going to save them.

All towns have sins, most hide them well, but King Town?
The sins rule here.
And they each have a name.
Archer Knight, Romeo Navarre, and Declan Dauphin rule this little town. And I am theirs.
Together, we have come up with a plan to make sure our throne never ends.

My father has no idea what is coming next.

Some say our story started with a fairytale but it will end in blood and crowns.

Recommend for 18+ readers due to content. This is a full-length book and the first of five books in this series and a reverse harem romance which means the main characters has more than one love interest.

I am a big fan of G. Bailey and all her Romance stories. When I got offer the opportunity to read the Boys of King Academy series, I took it without thinking it twice.

After a great ordeal for Ivy in book 1 and 2, we are now in the series finale where she ends up married against her will to Lucas to avoid her father killing her best friend. I was really happy to see that her relationship with Archer, Romy and Declan solidifies in this book and their interactions become super sweet and everything we crave in the end.

However, while Ivy was determined throughout the whole series to kill her father and get rid of the tyranny in Kings Town, how it all ends up happening seems a bit flat and anticlimatic. I was expecting more from Ivy getting her inner badass and get revenge for everything her father had done.

I really liked the group that's formed and the important message Bailey sent to her readers about women empowering each other and to stop tearing each other apart to achieve our own agenda. It would have been really nice to see a bit more into the future and see how these got implemented with the different houses moving forwards.

I think for me, I was expecting a mind-blowing finale for Ivy's story and I would classify the one I got as a bit flat. However, I enjoyed the story and I am glad I read them. Most importantly, I can't wait to read Millie's story in Be my Traitor.

I received this e-ARC from PeachyKeen in order to provide an honest review.

DISCLAIMER: This post contains spoilers

Hello beautiful bookish people!

One thing this quarantine is allowing me to do aside from reading, is catching up on those shows I haven't been able to watch otherwise. One of them was the massively controversial show, 13 Reasons Why.

As an overall I am going to say that 13 Reasons Why S1 and S2 made sense. While S1 followed the story written by Jay Asher about Hannah's suicide, S2 followed up the story with the trial of the parents suing the school alongside Jess getting a chance to tell her story.

Then we get to S3 with 3 timelines that confused and annoyed more than one viewer where we get the timeline from Tyler's scene at the school dance, the timeline where Bryce Walker is dead and they are investigating Clay as a possible suspect and the timeline where Ani, a new character, appears to be building a story "telling the truth" of what happened to Bryce to the police and working as a voice over for the other two timelines. *Big sigh* This, for me, is where it stopped being 13 Reasons Why and it started blurring the lines with a teenage version of Agatha Christie's Poirot.

Then we discover that Alex was the one that actually killed Bryce and then all the group of friends formed in S1 and S2 help him cover up the murder while blaming Monty, who by the way is in jail now for what he did to Tyler, because Alex deserves a second chance in life. You would ask yourselves, how can they get away with pinning the murder onto Monty? Surely, the guy would give an alibi right? Well, no if he is dead. So the character gets killed in jail for being a child molester by an inmate.

*Screams into a pillow*

While I think Bryce was trash and deserved to be in jail for being an entitled rapist asshole, murder is murder. In my opinion, helping Alex and "making it okay" that he murdered Bryce because he was a garbage human being sets a bad precedent that portrays a sort of vigilante behaviour. Well, he committed a crime, so he deserves to die. Okay, where does that stop? I am not trying to take importance of Bryce's crimes or excusing him. Some people where really offended by this season because it "humanised Bryce". But he was a human being, a trashy and horrible one, but still human. I believe the intention of the season was to show that people can change? But 12 episodes got completely obliterated in the last episode where we see that Bryce did not change at all while threatening Zack and Jessica.

So now, here we are in S4 with lots of mixed feelings and wondering what else can happen now. Hoping this is the season where these things get fixed. Well, no. I understand the intention of the writers: trauma. It is a whole season focused on trauma, PTSD, depression and dissociative behaviour. Which, don't get me wrong, for people who live with someone suffering from one or more of these diseases can be somewhat helpful (even more if the person in your life confirms that's what happens to them in certain situations). It personally help me with my partner anyway. I know other people might disagree, but I can only talk from my point of view and experience.

As a quick summary, Clay is the main driver of this whole season again and the rest of the characters are just feeding into the whole trauma topic. Clay ends up suffering from dissociative behaviour due to help covering Bryce's murder and starts acting out while losing big chunks of time and not remembering doing certain things. There are certain scenes that made me incredibly upset and uncomfortable and that I would advise to be careful if you are watching with someone suffering from any of the issues from above.

Now my ranting starts. We are completely off from where we started. The show is no longer 13 Reasons Why. I mean, for starters it breaks the pattern of having 13 episodes and only has 10. Okay, I know I am being picky here and it is really not a bother, but it sort of feeds the narrative of my ranting.

Clay is a complete utter dickhead throughout the whole season. Pardon my language. Yes, again, we should still feel sorry and be wary cause we know there's something not 100% right there, even though at the beginning we don't know what it is exactly. However, the way he treats Justin? Utter garbage. The roles are now reversed from S2 and you may think, well, Clay was the one suffering from Justin's anger and pent-up issues, now it's Justin's turn to take it all in. Sure. Okay. But there are things like: "My parents made us get tested because they think you are a junkie" or "These are my parents" it is not okay.

We know Justin's history. The story of abuse, the drug addiction, the absentee parents, the bad role models, and the abandonment issues. I think Justin started as a antagonist character where at some point due to the pressure and the situation in S1 was even considering getting "rid of" Clay. Then, he gets a reality check and tries to do better. He tries to protect Jess and then flees his home thanks to Meth Seth, ending up living in the streets, addicted to heroin and prostituting in order to get money to buy drugs. Clay saves him, the Jensen's adopt him and help him get properly clean. He comes back and now you have Clay having his own crisis and it seems it is okay to trade on all of Justin's issues and insecurities which leads him (amongst other things) to relapse.

Not only that but when Clay stops being an utter jerk, Justin collapses in the middle of the prom dance leading to him ending up in hospital with a doctor telling us that Justin's HIV has progressed into AIDS due to his time being in the streets and relapsing shortly after.

*deep, deep sigh*

Can I just say that the only character worth following and what, at least for me, made this season worth watching (aside from what I could learn to help my partner) was Justin? I think it is quite unfair selling this story and killing this character because (in my opinion) helped Jess' character have a nice and neat ending as an activist and a woman who can be strong and keep fighting and surviving. Could she not have been that alongside Justin? Someone who supported her and her fights no matter what throughout the whole TV show (okay, let's just avoid talking about S1).

The fact that even Clay's character questions why Justin was not saved, why nothing was done, to his therapist when it is easy to do some research and find that for HIV to progress into AIDS it can take years (6-8 years approx.) and, even then, there are now a series of treatments for people to live with AIDS. I know the message was to get tested, speak about it regardless of being ashamed for what society may think of us, but I think the message could have been sent across while saving Justin's character. Actually, it would have been even more powerful if the show presented what happens when you actually talk about it, how it is okay and how people with HIV/AIDS can have somewhat normal lives.

So yeah... Justin dies and it broke my heart. I am actually fully aware that I am crying over a fictional character and I still think this character deserved better. All the bullshit of breaking up with Jess (while she was being precious and not understanding where Justin came from) to fully recover to be a better person, staying clean and confiding in the football coach, learning to seek for help when things become too much and then, finally, getting accepted into college by having Clay as his positive influence was for absolutely nothing.

If you have a heart, you could NOT not cry with Justin's college essay:

"... He's my brother. He's my positive influence. He is the reason I am alive and able to write this colleague essay in the first place."

Okay, I had to take a break here because I started crying like a baby yet again. I am sorry I am late into the rage wagon about Justin's death, but here I am ready to scream with you all.

For the other characters, Ani still feel a bit irrelevant to me even in the end. Tony ends up getting a scholarship (full ride) to Nevada University for boxing and sells the garage with the blessing of his father back in Mexico. Alex is now in a relationship with our wholesome and amazing Charlie St. George. Jessica is now an activist and going to uni while at the same time letting go of Bryce. Tyler is happy. Period. He is another of my favourite characters that has a similar journey as Justin and gets his fair ending. Zack spiralled so much he barely makes it to graduation and the football coach offer him a summer job helping him train the team. But also, he ends up getting an audition to play the guitar and sing (didn't see that coming). Clay gives us a very inspiring graduation speech which I, low key, will use from time to time and ends up (finally) leaving Evergreen with Tony to go to Brown.

"... life is a pretty spectacular thing. Even in the worst days."

Like Clay, I do believe that all of us suffer from depression and (maybe) anxiety. We all feel a bit blue and like the world is too much for us sometimes. I mean, how can we not these days? But also, one good thing that the program tells us is that "... life is a pretty spectacular thing. Even in the worst days." and that's what I am keeping with me and what I will keep telling my partner every day.

Overall, the ending of the series was really disappointing. While I thank the writers for giving us certain topics that obviously helped us open a conversation, there are other points where it felt (at least to me) they were trying to be politically correct and please today's masses rather than giving the opportunity to the characters to have a big finale true to themselves.

If you agree with me, here's my tip: Justin didn't die. He is loving life in University and living with the Jensen's. The End.

Dawn Rising (Awakened #1)

by Lisa M. Green
Publisher: Trident Publishing
Release Date: September 3rd 2020
Genre: Young Adult, Adult, Fairy Tale, Fantasy, Adventure
Goodreads | Amazon | B&N | BookDepository | iTunes | Kobo | Google Books

Synopsis:

Note from the author: I'm officially categorizing it as Adult, but several betas assumed it was YA (The main character is 20 and most characters are 20-24ish, but themes are very heavy on YA-type ideas like coming-of-age).

ONCE UPON A TIME, A GIRL WAS BORN. A HUNDRED YEARS LATER, SHE GREW UP.

Aurianna must rewrite the past in order to save the future. She was supposed to be the answer to an enigmatic prophecy discovered on the night of her birth. But a terrible curse changed her life forever.

That is, until a mysterious stranger arrives to break the spell. He awakens Aurianna to the truth of her past and the powers she never knew she had.

When he sweeps her back in time, she discovers there is more to her life than she ever imagined. The world she encounters is both strange and familiar. But learning to control her newfound elemental powers will be the least of her problems.

She must race against time to uncover the truth about a catastrophe that will leave the world broken, divided, and at war.

Aurianna just wants answers. But the people need a savior.

Can you briefly describe DAWN RISING and its characters?

Dawn Rising is the first book in the Awakened series and is very loosely based on the story of Sleeping Beauty, with a few other bits and pieces of stories thrown in here and there (if you’re looking carefully).

Aurianna is the main protagonist of the Awakened series. She has grown up in a world with no direct sunlight, a world that barely manages to sustain itself. She is extremely stubborn and struggles with trusting others ever since she was betrayed by those she thought of as friends. Everything changes when a stranger named Pharis shows up in Aurianna's world, claiming to be from another time and intent on taking her back with him. His true identity is not completely known at the beginning of the story. He has a bit of a temper and resents the fact that he was sent to retrieve her. Pharis has his own secrets, especially about his father.

There are quite a few other characters that become a part of Aurianna’s group, but these two are the POV characters for this particular book.

Could you describe your story with emojis?

⏳🌅😲🏰🔥💧⛰⚡️🌀🐎🦊🦸‍♀‍️🚂♾️

Who would you say is your favourite character from the story and why?

Leon is my favorite character because of his backstory. You find out that backstory in book 2, Darkness Awakening. So much of his behavior makes a little more sense once you realize what he’s dealt with for most of his life. I just want to give him a hug! A close second would have to be Pharis . . . because Pharis.

How did the story occur to you? Did you find inspiration anywhere?

The story began as an idea about time travel in a fantasy world. One of the big questions about time travel is if time travel is ever discovered in the future, why has no one (that we know of) ever traveled to the past? Wouldn’t someone come back to visit if it were possible? I took that thought and ran with it. My story has visitors from other time period, but it’s not the one they think it is.

If you could choose one song to describe your book, which one would it be?

“Centuries” by Fall Out Boy. I have playlists on my YouTube channel for each book as I do the cover reveals, but that song is the overarching song for the entire series.

What drink and place do you think will go with your book to have a perfect book date?

A bottle or two of Moscato in Lake Como, Italy. I was lucky enough to visit there during my honeymoon back in 2014. I already had my idea for the time travel aspects of the story by that point, and the map of my world started with Lake Como as a basic design. It doesn’t really look like it anymore, but if you squint your eyes and turn your head sideways, it’s still there. Sort of. LOL! Several locations in the world are based on Italian cities/regions as well. I’ll let the readers figure out what is what.

Can you recommend your readers any other books in case they are left hungry for more once they finish DAWN RISING?

The second instalment in the Awakened series is available for preorder now and will be released on November 19. You can find Darkness Awakening at most online retailers (or ask for it to be ordered at your local library or bookstore). Book three will be out sometime in the earlier part of 2021.

As for other authors, I highly recommend Heart of Mist, book one of The Oremere Chronicles by Helen Scheuerer. Find me on Goodreads if you’d like to see other books I’ve read and enjoyed.

What’s next for you?

Once I send the third and final book of the series off to the editor, I plan to start my next project. I had originally thought it would be a six-book series, but it might only be four or five, depending on how the outline changes as I go. That one is also a loosely based fairy tale retelling, but it hits on at least six different fairy tales (possibly more), as well as quite a few characters from Greek and Norse mythology. Completely twisted to suit my needs, of course <evil laugh>!!!
